6 Steps to Fix a Leaking Roof

If you notice a leak in the roof of your home then you need to act as soon as possible to prevent any more damage to your home and your possessions. Even if it is a small leak, by the time you notice it, the water has probably gone through the woodwork, the insulation and the drywall. The sooner you deal with the leak, the less damage the water will have a chance to do.

1. Place a container under the leak

Even if you notice a dark stain on the ceiling you should place something under it. Once it starts to drip you can always move the bucket or whatever water container you have improved to the correct spot later. It doesn’t hurt to also put a few towels around the bucket too as the water can splash out of the bucket as it gets full.

2. Move anything valuable

Take a quick look around the room that has the leak in it. Just in case any more leaks spring up you should make sure that you do a quick inspection of the room and check what objects are susceptible to water damage. Pay extra special attention to electronics. Even a few drops can ruin a TV or computer.

3. Drain the water if there is a lot building up

If the water is dripping through but the dark spot on your ceiling continues to grow you need to let the water drain. If too much water builds up then it could put a lot of strain on the drywall and potentially collapse. As you will probably need to replace this part anyway, you should make a few small drill holes into the ceiling to let the water drain. You only need to do this if you think that the water is building up too much too fast. After all, patching a few holes is a lot easier than replacing a whole chunk of your ceiling.

4. Find out where the water is coming from

After the rain has stopped you should wait until your roof is dry to inspect the damage. If you can’t see anything from the ground then you should explore inside of your attic if you have one. If the sun is shining when you do this then you may be able to see where there are any holes in your roof as that is where the light is shining. If you are not sure where to look, don’t hesitate to call a roofing contractor for their expertise.

5. Check the weather forecast

Are you expecting more rain before a roofing expert can come and fix your roof? If so you may want to prepare as best you can. If you feel comfortable going out onto your roof to fix it then, by all means, go ahead. It is always best to call a professional to repair your roof. The damage is likely already done and waiting for the team of roofing experts to come and make the repairs is always advised. After all, if you are able to repair the roof yourself it is possible that you may leave a small hole in the roof where moisture can still get in.

6. Make sure that you address the water damage

Now that the roof has been repaired, you will need to ensure that the water damage that has been done is properly repaired and that any drywall or insulation that has been exposed to the water is replaced. The last thing that you want is to have mould in your home. You may want to use a dehumidifier as well to help dry out the room as quickly as possible.
